Licensed and Ordained Ministry

The ordained ministry serving the member communities of the Progressive Episcopal Church consists of the traditional threefold order of deacon, priest and bishop.
After a thorough and prayerful period of discernment, those who discover and identify their vocation to serve in the ordained ministry are given the opportunity to complete academic preparation through formal seminary studies and practical learning opportunities. Practical and pastoral training is conducted in the context of a local ministry setting under the guidance of the bishop with which the candidate intends to serve.
The Progressive Episcopal Church welcomes and encourages those who are in the process of discerning their call to the ordained ministry, or who are interested in incardinating into a community of the Progressive Episcopal Church, to contact a bishop to discuss their discernment further.

LICENSED MINISTER PROGRAM
The Progressive Episcopal Church is committed to assisting, guiding and serving people who want to make a difference in their lives, their communities and the world, by planting and developing small local faith communities.
In order to facilitate the planting and developing of local faith communities, the Bishops of the Progressive Episcopal Church offer the Licensed Minister Program (LMP).
Licensed Ministers plant and form local Christian communities that are rooted in scripture, informed by tradition, guided by reason and refined by experience. Licensed Ministers are people who have responded to the call of God in their lives and have been licensed by their bishop to proclaim and demonstrate the liberating Gospel of Jesus Christ through a commitment to people, progress and peace in an organized manner, in the context of forming, emerging or developing local faith communities.
Licensed Ministers are members of the laity who either intend to continue service as Licensed Ministers , are in the process of discernment of vocation in their diocese or are preparing for ordination to the diaconate or priesthood as seminarians.
The Bishop may issue a license to those announcing their intent to serve in this ministry. Licensed Ministers serve at the direction of the Bishop and in consultation with the local community vestry or mission committee of the faith community to which they are deployed.
Licenses do not authorize the minister to perform sacramental functions reserved for ordained clergy. Licenses expire after twenty four (24) months, but may be renewed after a full evaluation of fruitfulness and a clear necessity of commission is determined by the bishop. Licenses are not transferable from one local community to another.
